I spend lots of time looking at photos of metal clay art and jewelry. I’m blown away every day by the talent that oozes through this metal clay community. So, you can imagine my surprise when I came across this photo of something so completely different. Lesley Messam has painted lava beads with silver clay paste with intriguing results. What I want to know is where did this idea come from?
Check out more of Lesley’s work on her Web site and on her Flickr photostream.

I just love this piece–sort of a melding of organic and industrial. Makes me think a little of the design scheme of the Chronicles of Riddick (maybe a little Terminator 3 thrown in). I watched Chronicles of Riddick sort of by accident several months ago and really got sucked into the color/texture scheme of the set scenery and wardrobe–I’ve had several half formed ideas I would like to execute *SIGH* someday that were inspired by the wardrobe and photography in that film. Lots of black, gunmetal, silver, sepia, antiqued brass, and a little bright gold, with sort of an Egyptian Norse pagan steampunk flavor, if there is such a thing. I think PMC would really lend itself to riffing on that film’s design theme.
This is truly unique. I love black and mixing the lava stones with silver is fantastic. Thanks for sharing this artist with me.
Thanks for commenting, Keirsten and Beth. I was really captivated by this unique piece as well.
Absolutely beautiful Lesley! I love the organic feel and the colors.
